Established in 1971 by a Provincial Order in Council, The P.E.I. Grain Elevators Corporation provides commercial grain handling & logistics, marketing (both pool and open market) and value added services to farmers. It also offers growers access to cost effective storage infrastructure, crop risk management tools and, sound business relationships with end use customers in all three of the domestic, regional and International market places. Size and scale are important. Accordingly, there are three elevator facilities operating across Prince Edward Island with a combined storage & handling capacity in excess of 32,000 metric tonnes.
The administrative head office is located in Kensington. Daily operations are overseen by a seven person Board of Directors working in tandem with a committed work force. Major crops handled & marketed include feed barley, feed wheat, milling wheat, corn, oats, and, soybeans. Diversification is important. New crop opportunities under investigation, include malting barleys, pearled barley and, winter cereals. Trucking, custom drying, grain and oilseed roasting & extruding round out some of the value added services available to the industry. A feed ingredient import service is also available upon request.
GEC is a member of the Atlantic Grains Council and in that role supports regional research project identification and prioritization as well as a voluntary levy collection service and policy support.
The well respected risk management and price advisory service is part of the considerable efforts expended by GEC in terms of ensuring that P.E.I. grain and oilseed stakeholders are well connected to local, regional, and global grain and oilseed market trends resulting in profitable returns to all industry stakeholders.
